The U.S. Department of Labor reported in September 2004 that watching TV accounted for about half the leisure time on average for both American men and women (see chart below). The Department's Time Use Survey showed that watching TV was third in total daily use of time behind working and sleeping.

Go back 25 years and in my small mountainous town in northern Pakistan was still conservative.
There was only one TV channel, and all the country used the watch the same stuff from 5 in the evening to midnight.
That gave a sense of community, when people used to discuss last nights tv shows.
There was no satellite dish or cable tv with zillion channels.
I remember playing with empty shoe boxes, and making cars out of them.It used to be fun using my imagination and driving the shoe boxes as cars or trucks.
I had a little hobby of climbing trees.I was always on the look out for the highest tree around, and me with my friends used to spend days conquering the tree.
There was no cartoon network or Disney channel,so we did not spend hours in front of the television.
The only kids program was a 10 minute cartoon,at around 6 in the evening, and i never missed that. But that was it,as there was nothing else of any interest for kids on TV.
Then came the satellite TV,and then the cable, and now people's ideas of entertainment has totally changed.
Kids can easily spend a few hours watching cartoons, and adults can't decide which channel to watch, and keep abusing the remote control.
And i can't decide which adult website to visit and watch some hilarious titts ![]()
