In my home country Pakistan,there have always been immigrants.
4 million Afghan refugees,now immigrants,and still coming.Many thousands from Somalia,as there is a civil war going on there.
Iranians from the times of revolution of Iran.
Most of them have their second or third generation living there.
The Afghans integrated very well,as they look alike,and speak pushto,which is a widely spoken language in Pakistan,and they are Muslims.Now almost nobody considers them as foreigners or immigrants.They are as much Pakistani,as anyone else.
The problem arise (although it is not a problem for me) when a person looks different,or speaks a different language.
The Chinese and Somalians,sometimes face discrimination.Not that people shout abuse on them,but people can't accept that a person looking foreign is as Pakistani as they are.
I had an ethnic chinese class felow in school,i blogged about him earlier.His grand dad immigrated to Pakistan in early 50s.
He and his parents are Pakistani born,and to me he is as Pakistani as myself.
He has a Chinese food restaurant in my home town,and he gets people who ask him questions like,where from china do you belong?In fact he has never been to China :))
I regularly visited his restaurant with my family.Once i went there with my grandma.Once she saw some different faces,serving the food,she refused to eat at all.I asked her why she doesn't want to eat.She replied,that these Chinese eat snakes and weird stuff,i can't trust them :))
It took me and the rest of the family,about half an hour to argue with her,that they are born here,lived here,and know the local values,so we can trust them.But nothing worked,and she still refused,although it was and embarrasing situation,but what could we do?
To some of my friends,who are grown ups but are not good at accepting other people,all isay is that do not bugg yourself thinking about it,and do not bugg them asking about it.Live and let live.
