Pakistan is a strong hold of islam, and this country has a large population of practical muslims.Turks also call themselves muslims but they can't be called practical. That was just an example to define "Practical muslim" .
I live north of islamabad,in the himalayan foot hills. The mountains here are between 8 to ten thousand feet high, but i don't live that high, just 4 thousand feet.
Near my home town of "Abbottabad" , there is a hospital called "Bach christian hospital",run and owned by german christian missionaries.
They are there to preach christianity, their way. They are very polite and gentle. The hospital is situated in a rural area, where the people are poor.
They don't charge any money from the poor.At the same time each hosoital room and ward has many copies of bibles translated in the local language.
The doctors and nurses encourage the mostly muslim patients to read the bible in their spare time. They talk to them about christanity, and preach them.
These missionaries are hardy people with a lot of money coming from germany and other resources.
The winters are harsh in the high mountains and remote villages are difficult to reach due to snow.
These people make dispenseries in the remote areas during winters.People in need of medical assistance visit them during winter,as the town of Abbottabad is difficult to reach.During this time many muslims convert to christianity. They get impressed by them, and they also pay them. The payment part makes the new christian well off and not in need of the rest of the family, who are still muslims.
A few years ago a muslim scholar in that area converted to christianity.
The christian missionaries are working since the colonial times. Many local hindus and muslims have ben converted. The churchs built by the british are still there. To my knowledge , none was damaged by the local muslim population.
The christian folks attend their sunday service, according to their way,and no body buggs them there.
Pakistan is the originator of islamic renaisense. The jihad version, who argue that only an islamic governament can make people to practice islam. The others say that islam is a beleif, and a beleif is in hearts and minds, and hearts and minds can be influenced by islam only by the freewill of the person itself.
Many muslims preach islam politely and try to win a person's own concent to practice islam, and here i mention that islam at the moment is only being preached to muslims,as they are in need of much improvement.Only if a non muslim shows his/her own interest, then he/she is taught islam. They don't lure people by money.
Will write more later.....

Thanks for your comment.I appreciate.I too have been to 43 countries and have seen both christian and muslim preachers working to preach their religion. In rotterdam i met a group of christian missionaries who gave me litrature about christianity in URDU..our national language.I was amused. They talked to me about chriatianity and they had a scheme for settling down, new converts,by setting up their business and helping them to settle down in holland.
Activities like thesse were more common in the times of USSR.
The west wanted a better image than rival USSR.Governaments supportd christian missionaries,as most USSR rivals were technically christian countries, and yes a lot of money was involved.
Practical muslims are those who have a true islamic faith and observe islam in their lives, things like going to 5 times prayser, eating , sleeping , behaving with neighbours , animals , running a busineaa according to islam is "Practical islam"...Just saying that i am a muslin is not Muslim enough.-

(I enjoyed reading you post; I have a visceral distrust of missonaries - their motives, their role in trying to reshape the world)
You say Turks are not practical Muslims. You experience will be far more reliable than mine, but I'd been led to believe that many Turks are very devout - despite Turkey's secular constitution.-

Thanks for your comment.Yes many turks are devoted to their religion, but they are a very little minority, and mainly of kurdish origin.I just gave a comparison, ofcourse not a verdict

Thanks again for your comment.

Likewise, true Christians are those who are practical! By that I mean not just talking or trying to "convert" people but rather taking action with regards to social issues such as poverty, providing shelter for homeless people and taking steps towards peace and justice. I don't want to open a can of worms but so many Christians kept silent over the injustice carried out by Israel.

i agree with you.All religions are there to be practice. These are ways of life, not political parties.I don't like people exploting religion for their politics.

Islamic renaissance? In Pakistan? Who led it? Did it spread to adjoining Aghanistan too? Please tell more about this. The world is completely unaware of this movement.

I have two questions:
1) Why do they pay the new Christians?
2) Inspite of this new payment, why does the new Christian no longer need their family? Are people so superficial that money keeps them together as a family rather than love and a desire to remain together as a family.-

Money is used an offering to convert to christianity,as their main audience are the poor people. They are likely tobe attracted towards money.I don't say that this is the only thing used to impress thm enough to convert. These missionaries are polite and helpful too.
In Pakistan, family hood and love is most of the times secondary and religion is primary.Convertion to any other faith is not welcomed, and hence these people are abandoned by their families.

I don't know about the money bit but there are Christian organisations that are prepared to help the needy while they try to convert. I've seen a few Catholic organisations behaving like that here in Europe. I have never liked it.
What do you mean exactly by practical Muslim?
